How our children’s incontinence support works

What to expect from our service

Comfort, confidence and control

Bedwetting, constipation, daytime wetting accidents and toileting difficulties are common concerns for many families, yet they can often leave children feeling embarrassed and parents unsure where to seek help.

Our goal is to help children feel comfortable, confident and in control, while supporting parents every step of the way. By providing expert clinical knowledge alongside practical, achievable strategies, we help families navigate continence challenges with confidence and optimism.

Our approach to child continence challenges

We take a compassionate, family-centred approach, working closely with children and their parents or carers to understand the underlying causes of continence problems and develop effective management strategies.

We start with a comprehensive assessment of your situation. We’ll then recommend strategies such as tailored medication regimes and treatments, toileting routine adjustments, behavioural approaches and confidence-building techniques.

Families can choose between a one-off consultation for focused assessment and advice, or a three month support package that provides ongoing guidance, monitoring and personalised care to help achieve lasting improvements.

Flexible appointments to suit you

We offer flexible appointment options to suit your family’s needs, including both face-to-face and remote consultations.

In addition to appointments at MediCentre Sussex, we are pleased to offer face-to-face consultations in Petersfield and the surrounding area, making specialist continence support more accessible to local families.

Specialist child continence care

Frequently asked questions

Your questions answered

There can be many different causes of child incontinence and it often runs in families.

A range of factors may be involved; physiological conditions, behavioural patterns and stress can all contribute to continence challenges.

We will help you to identify the causes of your child’s toileting issues and plan a positive way forward.

Occasional bedwetting, constipation, daytime accidents and general toileting difficulties are very common for all children.

However, if these are happening frequently or distressing your child, it’s a good idea to seek support. If your child is over five and bedwetting frequently, has daytime accidents or are constipated despite dietary changes, then you should seek support.

If your child has pain on passing urine or stools, blood in the urine or stools, or suddenly becomes incontinent for no apparent reason, please book an appointment or visit your usual GP immediately.

We support children aged five and upwards, including young adults.

On the whole we encourage parents or carers to attend the appointment with the child. However, we are happy for older children and young adults to attend the appointments by themselves.

Yes, you can just book a one-off appointment or a three month support package. When you contact us, we can discuss which approach is likely to give you the best outcome and then you can decide how to proceed.

We charge a fixed price for the initial consultation, during which we will assess your situation and recommend strategy to help you.

During your appointment, we’ll discuss any recommended tests, treatments or services and the costs associated with them.

Please see our price list for more information.

No, though you are very welcome to have your appointment here. We also offer remote appointments by video or phone, and home visits in Petersfield and the surrounding area.

Some tests may be recommended in order to identify any underlying causes of your child’s incontinence. For example, this might include urine tests and keeping a continence diary.

Our approach is tailored to the needs of every child and our continence specialist will discuss the best approach with you.

Yes, if appropriate we can prescribe medications or other medical treatments to help your child deal with their continence issues.

However, every child will be assessed to determine the best course of action for them. This may include medication, but we also consider many other strategies including toileting routines, behavioural approaches, and techniques to build their confidence.
